EMDR and Suicidality
Working Effectively with High-Risk Clients Without Setting the Trauma Work Aside
Guest: Guest: Wendy Skillern, LCSW
Live Training: Wednesday, September 9, 2026 · 1:00 PM Central
On-Demand: Recording available to Mastermind subscribers after the live session.
Somewhere in your EMDR work, a client tells you they have been thinking about ending their life. The session you had planned gives way to a more urgent one, and most of us respond the same way: slow down, shore up safety, and quietly set the trauma work aside until the risk has passed.
That instinct comes from a caring place, and it is not wrong. But the belief underneath it, that active suicidality puts reprocessing off the table, deserves a closer look than most of us were ever given. The research tells a more nuanced story, and the distance between what we were taught and what the evidence supports is where a lot of thoughtful clinicians get stuck: postponing the very work that might loosen the despair's grip, while wondering privately whether they are being too cautious or not cautious enough.
This is why we are opening the EMDR Mastermind Series here. Suicidality is one of the most requested and clinically consequential topics in EMDR consultation, and it belongs in a room where real cases can be worked through with an expert guide, not a lecture hall. Wendy Skillern has spent her career doing this work with high-risk clients, and she is bringing that experience to a focused hour built around the questions Basic Training never had time for.
In this Mastermind, we'll explore:
- Suicide risk factors and the clinical considerations that matter specifically for EMDR therapists, so your risk formulation and your trauma formulation stop living in separate silos
- What the current research actually says about EMDR and suicidality, and where it departs from what most of us absorbed in training
- How to assess when EMDR is appropriate for a client experiencing suicidal ideation, rather than treating ideation as an automatic contraindication
- Strategies for integrating suicidality considerations throughout all eight phases, so safety is built into the work instead of being a reason to stop it
- Practical approaches for staying grounded and inside your own window of tolerance when the clinical responsibility runs high

More Value Than It Costs. Your Questions.
One private consultation hour typically runs $100 to $200. A single afternoon CE workshop can cost more than three months here. And one stalled case you finally crack, one client who stays in treatment because you knew what to do, is worth more than a year of membership.
Less than most clinicians spend on coffee, and unlike coffee, it compounds.

About Your Trainer
Wendy Skillern
LCSW
Wendy Skillern is a licensed clinical social worker with more than twenty years of experience treating adolescents, adults, and couples, with her work centered on trauma, depression, and the self-protective patterns that travel with them. She is certified by the EMDR International Association and is currently an EMDR Consultant-in-Training with the Trauma Therapist Institute.
Her clinical approach is deliberately integrative. Alongside EMDR, she draws on Internal Family Systems, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and relational and psychoanalytic training, a range that matters for a session on high-risk clients, where stabilization and reprocessing have to be held within a single frame rather than treated as separate stages.
Wendy also provides EMDR consultation, clinical supervision, and workshop instruction, and she brings that consultative sensibility to the Mastermind, where the hour is built around the cases members actually carry. She practices as Healing for Good across California, New York, and Texas.
Every month, a deep dive into a framework you'll actually use.
October is one. Your subscription includes them all, live and on demand.

Four questions, answered.
Then you can decide.
Am I paying $49 for this one session?
No. This session is included with your EMDR Mastermind Series subscription, and your first month is free. Joining now also gets you next month's session, the full on-demand library, TTI's community, and every session after that for as long as you stay. Cancel anytime.
Do I have to talk, or bring a case?
No. Come curious, not prepared. Ask a question about a client you're stuck on, or stay muted and take notes. Both are normal, and both send you back to your caseload with something usable.
What if I can't make the live session?
Every session is recorded and added to your library, so you can watch on your own schedule. There's no penalty for a busy month and nothing to fall behind on.
Do I need to be certified to attend?
No. You only need to have completed an EMDRIA-approved Basic Training and be seeing clients. The Mastermind Series is open to any EMDR-trained clinician who wants to keep growing, certified or not.
