Common Mistakes in EMDR
Recognizing and Correcting the Missteps Experience Doesn’t Catch
Guest: Caitlin Weese, LCSW-C, EMDR Certified, EMDR TTI CIT
Live Training: Wednesday, Novemeber 11, 2026 · 1:00 PM Central
On-Demand: Recording available to Mastermind subscribers after the live session.
The mistakes that shape EMDR outcomes are usually not the ones we worried about early in training. Those get caught. The consequential ones are quieter: they settle in after years of practice, wearing the costume of clinical judgment. A target drawn a little too broadly. Processing started a little too soon, or held off a little too long. A plateau in the SUDS accepted as a finished target because the session was ending and everyone in the room was ready to be done.
What makes these mistakes durable is that no one is there to catch them. They do not announce themselves in session, they surface later as treatment that quietly underdelivers, and the clinician is usually the last person positioned to see their own pattern. Many of them trace back to a single uncomfortable question worth asking mid-session: is this about the client, or is this about me?
This session is a guided look in that mirror. Caitlin Weese works through the missteps experienced clinicians make without realizing it, from preparation and target selection through re-evaluation, and pairs each one with a practical tool for catching and correcting it in real time. Then we put the tools to work on real cases.
In this Mastermind, we'll explore:
-
Rushing into processing or holding off too long, and the preparation hierarchy that tells you which mistake you are making
- Targets drawn too broadly to resolve, and how to find the chapter inside the book a client brings you
- The therapist’s own parts getting in the way, and the honest questions that separate the client’s needs from your comfort
- Mistaking a processing plateau for completion, and the tools for squeezing the lemon rather than stopping halfway through the antibiotics
- Skipped body scans, missing future templates, and inaccurate negative beliefs, the quiet gaps that leave targets partially resolved, plus a script for re-engaging them

The mistakes experience doesn't catch.
They don't announce themselves in session. They surface later.
Time the start
Rushing into processing or holding off too long, and the preparation hierarchy that tells you which one you're doing.
Narrow the target
Targets drawn too broadly to resolve, and how to find the chapter inside the book a client brings you.
Ask the mirror question
Is this about the client, or is this about me? The questions that separate their needs from your comfort.
Finish the target
Plateaus mistaken for completion, skipped body scans, missing future templates, inaccurate negative beliefs.

More Value Than It Costs. Your Questions.
One private consultation hour typically runs $100 to $200. A single afternoon CE workshop can cost more than three months here. And one stalled case you finally crack, one client who stays in treatment because you knew what to do, is worth more than a year of membership.
Less than most clinicians spend on coffee, and unlike coffee, it compounds.

About Your Trainer
Caitlin Weese
LCSW-C, CIT
Caitlin Weese is a trauma therapist and the founder of Intuitive Healing and Wellness, where she works with adult survivors of childhood abuse and emotional neglect on the presentations complex PTSD tends to organize: perfectionism, people-pleasing, and a nervous system that never fully stands down. EMDR sits at the center of her work, integrated with Internal Family Systems, Polyvagal Theory, and structural dissociation theory so that reprocessing is scaffolded by the stabilization and parts work complex cases require. She uses EMDR in both weekly therapy and intensive formats, and her training as a registered yoga teacher informs the somatic side of preparation.
Alongside her caseload, Caitlin consults with other clinicians working with complex trauma, which is where the same case-level thinking she brings to this session takes shape.
Every month, a deep dive into a framework you'll actually use.

Four questions, answered.
Then you can decide.
Am I paying $49 for this one session?
No. This session is included with your EMDR Mastermind Series subscription, and your first month is free. Joining now also gets you next month's session, the full on-demand library, TTI's community, and every session after that for as long as you stay. Cancel anytime.
Do I have to talk, or bring a case?
No. Come curious, not prepared. Ask a question about a client you're stuck on, or stay muted and take notes. Both are normal, and both send you back to your caseload with something usable.
What if I can't make the live session?
Every session is recorded and added to your library, so you can watch on your own schedule. There's no penalty for a busy month and nothing to fall behind on.
Do I need to be certified to attend?
No. You only need to have completed an EMDRIA-approved Basic Training and be seeing clients. The Mastermind Series is open to any EMDR-trained clinician who wants to keep growing, certified or not.
