Clinical Conversation
Treating Complex PTSD
Recognizing Developmental Trauma in Adult Clients
Guest: Christine A. Courtois, PhD, ABPP
Adult survivors of childhood trauma rarely arrive announcing it. They come in with depression that will not lift, anxiety that has outlasted several medication trials, relationships that keep breaking down in familiar ways, or a chart that already holds four diagnoses and no explanation that ties them together.
Join Dr. Christine Courtois, one of the founding voices in the treatment of complex trauma, for a clinically grounded conversation on recognizing complex PTSD in adult clients and treating it with the sequenced, relationship-based approach she helped define.
In This Conversation, We Will Explore:
- What distinguishes complex PTSD from classic PTSD, and why the difference changes treatment planning from the first session
- How childhood developmental trauma shows up in adult clients, often wearing the mask of depression, anxiety, personality pathology, or treatment resistance
- Why so many survivors spend years misdiagnosed, and what to listen for when the presenting problem is not the whole story
- The logic of sequenced, relationship-based treatment: what comes first, what waits, and why pacing protects the work
- Ways to introduce the complex trauma frame to clients so the diagnosis brings relief and self-understanding rather than shame
- How this lens sharpens the trauma therapist training and clinical judgment you already bring to your most complex cases
This is not a scripted webinar. It is a live, one-hour conversation with real-time chat and Q&A, created for working clinicians who want something they can use this week.
