EMDR Intensives Training
The Clinician’s Playbook for Screening, Structuring, and Pricing Intensives
It happens on a Tuesday afternoon. Your client is finally in it. The memory network is open, the processing is moving, and then the clock runs out. You close the session as well as you can, and they walk out the door into 167 hours of life before you can pick the thread back up. By the next session, a work crisis or a family blowup has pulled the target out of reach again.
EMDR clinicians have a name for what gets lost when trauma work is chopped into 50-minute weekly increments: therapeutic overhead. The opening check-ins, the re-stabilizing, the re-orienting to the target. For some clients, that overhead is manageable. For others, it is the reason treatment stalls for months.
EMDR intensives offer a different structure. Extended sessions and multi-day formats concentrate reprocessing into a condensed window, and emerging research on intensive formats reports strong retention and outcomes comparable to weekly EMDR (Hurley, 2018; Bongaerts et al., 2017). Clients get momentum. You get to see one client for a day of focused work instead of stacking six back to back. And because intensives are typically private pay, they can support the financial sustainability of your practice while you do some of the most meaningful clinical work of your week.
The catch: nobody handed you the playbook. How do you know which clients are appropriate? What does a 1-day versus a 3-day schedule actually look like? What do you charge, and what happens if you finish early? This training answers those questions with a complete framework, from the first screening conversation to the aftercare plan.

Practical Skills
Practical Interventions You'll Learn
- Screen for fit using inclusion markers (window of tolerance, stabilization history, support system, realistic expectations) and contraindication frameworks for psychosis, severe dissociative presentations, active suicidality, substance dependence, and medical instability.
- Build a belief-focused target sequence plan that links the presenting complaint to negative and adaptive core beliefs across past, present, and future.
- Titrate processing across the continuum of EMD, EMDr, and EMDR to keep clients inside their window of tolerance during long blocks.
- Structure extended sessions and 1, 2, and 3-day intensives with resourcing, breaks, titration, and closure built into the schedule rather than left to chance.
- Set your fee structure using hourly and daily-rate models, handle deposits and refund scenarios, and budget the transition toward offering intensives in your practice.
- Plan aftercare deliberately, including psychoeducation, self-care protocols, grounding tools, check-in windows, and post-intensive assessment.

Is This For You?
Who Is This Training For
You're in the right place if:
- EMDR-trained clinicians who keep hearing about intensives and want a clear, complete roadmap instead of piecing it together alone
- Private practice therapists looking to add a private-pay offering that serves clients deeply and buffers against burnout
- Clinicians whose weekly clients stall, loop, or lose momentum between sessions despite careful pacing
- Therapists who work with adults, first responders, veterans, and other clients who want focused work in a shorter window
- Clinicians curious about extended sessions as a first step before committing to multi-day formats
This is an advanced training. Completion of an EMDR basic training is expected. EMDRIA certification is not required to attend or to begin offering extended sessions.

About Your Trainer
Larisa Traga
LCSW, MAC, CCDS
Larisa A. Traga, LCSW, MAC, CCDS is an EMDRIA Certified Therapist, Approved Consultant, and Approved Trainer, as well as a MINT Certified Trainer in Motivational Interviewing. She is the founder of Empower TCT, where she trains clinicians in EMDR, Motivational Interviewing, trauma-informed care, and co-occurring disorders, and she actively offers EMDR intensives in her own practice for clients seeking deeper, focused work over a shorter period than weekly sessions allow.
Larisa leads EMDRIA-recognized EMDR basic trainings in the United States and internationally, including in-person trainings in Los Angeles and Tokyo, and presented at the 2026 EMDRIA Conference. She has served as an adjunct psychology and human services instructor at Allan Hancock College since 2015. Her clinical approach integrates EMDR with Motivational Interviewing, CBT, Trauma Resiliency Model approaches, and mindfulness, with an emphasis on evidence-based, culturally sensitive care. This course teaches the intensive model she uses with real clients, not a theoretical version of it.
