Where Certification Fits

BT-Trained, Certified, Consultant. Here's What Each One Actually Means.

The terminology gets confused all the time, even by therapists already practicing EMDR. Here's the clean version.

Step 1

EMDR Basic Training

You've completed an EMDRIA-approved Basic Training program. You can practice EMDR with clients. You are not yet "certified."

You Are Here

Step 2

EMDRIA-Certified Therapist

You've completed Basic Training plus 20 additional consultation hours, 50 client EMDR sessions, and 12 CE credits in EMDR-related content. You hold a credential clients, employers, and referral networks recognize.

Step 3

EMDRIA-Approved Consultant

You've been certified for at least two years and completed Consultant-in-Training requirements. You can now train and consult with other EMDR therapists.

Certification is the bridge. It's where EMDR moves from something you do to something you're known for.

What the Process Actually Looks Like

A Clear Path from Registered to Certified

No mystery, no guesswork. Here's how it unfolds.

1

Register

Pick your payment plan and enroll. You'll get immediate access to the Certification Hub, the EMDR Refresher Course, and your competency tracker. If you're still finishing Basic Training consultation, you can dig into resources right away while you wrap up.

2

Get Paired With Your Consultants

Within one week, you'll submit a "Get to Know You" form so we can pair you with consultants who fit your clinical focus, learning style, and schedule. This isn't whoever's available. It's intentional.

3

Complete Your Consultation Hours

20 consultation hours total: 10 individual and 10 group. Group consultation runs in cohorts of up to 4 people, monthly, with active engagement expected. Individual consultation is paced to your needs and your client load. Plus 12 EMDRIA-eligible CE credits, all included in the program, so you finish your hours and your CEs in the same place.

4

Submit to EMDRIA

Use your competency tracker to confirm you've met every EMDRIA requirement. Submit your certification application. Add the credential to your name.

Most therapists complete certification in 6 to 18 months, depending on pace and caseload. We help you build the timeline that works.

Consultation Pairing, Done Right

The Right Consultant Changes Everything

We don't hand you a roster. We make the match.

Most certification programs assign whoever's free. We don't work that way. After you register, you fill out a "Get to Know You" form covering your clinical focus, the populations you work with, your learning style, your schedule, and what you're hoping to grow into as an EMDR therapist. From there, our team pairs you with consultants from our vetted faculty who actually fit.

Every Consultant Is EMDRIA-Approved

Vetted by TTI for clinical depth, teaching skill, and the relational, shame-free style we expect across the program.

Paired With Intention

Matched to your specialty, schedule, and how you learn best. Not just who's open.

Accountable to You

If the fit isn't right, we adjust. Your consultation experience matters more to us than the org chart.

Already working with someone on TTI faculty? You can request to keep them. We do everything we can to honor that.

Inside the Program

Everything You Get with TTI Certification

One enrollment, one price, no surprise add-ons.

20 Hours of Consultation

10 hours of individual consultation paced to your caseload, plus 10 hours of group consultation in a cohort of up to 4. The hours where EMDR finally clicks.

EMDR Refresher Course ($280 value)

Rebecca Kase's full Refresher Course, included. Use it to tighten your protocol, prep for tougher cases, or catch up on anything that felt fuzzy after Basic Training.

12 EMDRIA-Eligible CE Credits

The 12 EMDR-related CE credits you need to complete your EMDRIA application, included.

Certification Competency Tracker

A built-in tracker that follows EMDRIA's exact requirements. You always know where you are and what's left.

The Certification Hub

On-demand learning, demonstration videos, downloads, and case examples you can pull up between consultation sessions. Lifetime access.

Community

A real one. Peers who are doing the same work, asking the same questions, and showing up consistently. Group consultation builds it. The community sustains it.

The Credibility Lift

Why Pursue EMDRIA Certification

Basic Training gets you in the door. Certification puts your name on it.

Clinical Confidence That Holds Under Pressure

The 20 hours of post-BT consultation are where complex trauma cases stop feeling like guesswork. You'll work through real cases with experienced consultants and walk away knowing your protocol, not hoping it.

A Credential Clients and Referrals Notice

Psychology Today filters for EMDR. Insurance panels recognize it. Other clinicians refer to it. Certification is one of the most-searched specialties in trauma therapy, and demand keeps climbing.

Demand That Keeps Growing

Searches for "EMDR therapy" are up over 100% in the last 5 years (Google Trends). Clients are actively looking for trained, credentialed providers. Certification puts you in front of them.

The Door to Consultant Status

EMDRIA Certification is the prerequisite for becoming an Approved Consultant. If teaching, training, or supervising other EMDR therapists is on your roadmap, certification is step one.

Stories from Therapists Now Certified Through TTI

"

This process was actually really reparative for me. In past consultations, I've had a tough time opening up for fear of looking like a "bad therapist." In reality, being open and honest is part of the learning experience. Because of the shame-free learning environment held up by my consultants and peers, I was able to lean into being imperfect, which has only helped me grow and be a better EMDR clinician.

"

I appreciate TTI holding space for EMDR therapists to deepen their knowledge and understanding through a polyvagal, trauma-informed lens. It's what drew me to certification here. I appreciate having lifetime access to the trainings and platform as I know I will refer to them over and over as a staple to my learning.

Overall, it was a great program and I enjoyed individual and group consultation. All the members from my consultation group were very thoughtful, insightful, and shared great feedback. All this in addition to resources and normalizing the learning curve.

Common Questions

EMDR Certification at TTI: What to Know

When can I start working toward certification?+
You can register for our EMDR Certification Program once you've completed all the lecture and practicum hours of an EMDRIA-approved Basic Training. You can't count hours toward certification until you've also finished the 10 hours of consultation required as part of Basic Training. If you register while you're still wrapping up BT, you get immediate access to the Certification Hub, downloads, and resources, you just can't count hours yet.
How long until I hear from your team after registering?+
You'll get a purchase confirmation immediately. A member of our team will reach out within one week with your "Get to Know You" form and next steps.
How are consultants assigned?+
After we receive your "Get to Know You" form, we hand-match you with consultants from our vetted faculty based on your clinical focus, schedule, and learning style. If you've worked with a TTI consultant before and want to continue with them, you can request that. Requests aren't guaranteed but we accommodate whenever possible.
How long does certification take?+
Most therapists complete certification in 6 to 18 months. The pace depends on your caseload and how quickly you can stack consultation hours alongside the 50 client EMDR sessions EMDRIA requires.
Can I use consultation hours I've already completed with TTI or Kase & Co?+
Yes. Existing TTI or Kase & Co hours count toward your certification with us. Email connect@traumatherapistinstitute.com so we can build you a custom plan that reflects what you've already done.
Am I required to record sessions with clients?+
Yes. Recording sessions for case review is an EMDRIA requirement for certification, not just a TTI requirement.
What does group consultation look like?+
Groups have up to 4 people and meet monthly. Each trainee is expected to engage actively for 10 to 15 minutes per session, so come prepared with cases or questions. The format varies by consultant: some are more collaborative, others more didactic.
Can I swap out the EMDR Refresher Course for something else?+
No. The Refresher Course is a bonus included in the program for everyone, whether you need a refresher or not.
What if I want to become an EMDRIA Approved Consultant later?+
Certification is step one. After two years of certified practice plus our Consultant Training Program, you'll meet the EMDRIA requirements to apply for Approved Consultant status. Many of our grads take that path.
