EMDR Advanced Training
Without clear readiness and risk frameworks, “caution” often turns into delay, avoidance, or a default back to talk therapy that never quite reaches the root. Clinicians are left holding anxiety about doing harm, doing EMDR “wrong,” or missing something critical in the presentation.
EMDR for Eating Disorders: Assessment, Conceptualization, and Intervention was created to fill that gap.
This live, 6‑CE training gives you a grounded, safety‑forward roadmap for assessing readiness, conceptualizing ED and disordered eating through an EMDR lens, and selecting and adapting protocols across a spectrum of presentations. You will not be asked to become an inpatient ED specialist. You will learn how to work more confidently and ethically with the outpatient and private‑practice clients you already see.
The focus is simple:
- Assess readiness with more than symptom checklists
- Reduce risk while honoring the client’s goals
- Integrate EMDR thoughtfully into ED/DE treatment, rather than applying it automatically
If you have ever wondered, “Is this client truly ready for EMDR, and how do I know?” this training is for you.
Practical Interventions You’ll Learn
- EMDR Phase 2 preparation strategies tailored for ED/DE clients
- Healing Place (ED-sensitive alternative to Safe Place)
- Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) resourcing to address shame and self-criticism
- Parts-informed mapping of ED/DE protective strategies (e.g., perfectionistic, controlling, numbing, parentified parts)
- Parts-informed stabilization and cooperation-building interventions prior to reprocessing
- Target selection focused on shame-based memories, attachment injuries, and identity wounds
- Cognitive and somatic interweaves specific to ED/DE themes (control, worthiness, body shame, safety)
- Strategies for titration, pacing, and fractionated processing to reduce overwhelm and dissociation
What You’ll Learn in This EMDRIA Approved Advanced Training
By the end of this training, you will have a more confident, safety‑oriented approach to EMDR with eating disorders and disordered eating.
We will cover:
- Foundations and context
- Key ED vs disordered eating features, common comorbidities, and how ED behaviors function as trauma‑driven survival strategies within an EMDR frame.
- Systems, culture, and shame
- How weight stigma, diet culture, oppression, and identity‑based harm shape ED/DE presentations, so you are not working only at the level of food and weight.
- Assessment and case conceptualization
- Practical readiness and risk criteria, EMDR‑informed case maps, and phase‑based treatment planning that move beyond symptom severity.
- Phase 2 stabilization for ED/DEÂ
- ED‑sensitive regulation strategies, alternatives to standard Safe Place work, and shame‑attuned resourcing that honor the body and the function of ED behaviors.
- Readiness, safety, and interweavesÂ
- When to move into reprocessing, when to pause or refer, and cognitive and somatic interweaves tailored to ED/DE themes like control, identity, and body safety.
- Protocols and relapse preventionÂ
- How to choose and adapt EMDR strategies such as DeTUR and FSAP, integrate with ED treatment teams, and plan for relapse prevention in a way that respects autonomy and nervous system realities.
Who Is This Course For?
This is a diagnosis‑specific training designed for a focused segment of EMDR clinicians. It is intentionally not a match for everyone in the TTI community.
You will get the most from this course if:
- You are an EMDR‑trained mental health professional who has completed EMDR Basic Training
- You primarily work in outpatient or private practice settings
- Your caseload includes clients with:
- Eating disorder diagnoses that do not always fit neatly into anorexia or bulimia categories
- Disordered eating patterns tied to trauma, shame, perfectionism, or identity
- High school or college‑aged girls and young women navigating intense body, performance, and identity pressures
- You want foundational competency in using EMDR with ED/DE presentations, not an inpatient‑level specialization
- You have asked yourself:
- “How do I assess readiness for EMDR beyond symptom severity?”
- “What are my contraindications and red flags with ED/DE?”
- “Which protocols actually fit this clinical picture, and how should I pace them?”
This course is a strong fit if you resonate with any of these:
- You feel a pull toward trauma processing with ED/DE clients but hesitate because of safety and scope‑of‑practice concerns
- You want clear, clinically grounded decision‑making frameworks rather than one‑size‑fits‑all rules
- You want to build on your existing EMDR skills, not replace your current ED approaches
If you are not EMDR‑trained, this will not be the right starting point. For those clinicians, TTI’s EMDR Basic Training and other trauma training are better entry paths into this work.
