EMDR Advanced Training

Advanced EMDR Skills

Strategies for Enhanced Trauma Processing

Trainer: Rebecca Kase
On-Demand: Available with lifetime access for asynchronous learning. This course was recorded on October 10-11th, 2024.

The standard EMDR protocol is your foundation. But when clients present with complex trauma, limited processing capacity, or destabilizing symptoms, you need more than protocol. You need a clinical toolkit built for the cases that keep you up at night.

Advanced EMDR Skills is a two-day on-demand training with Rebecca Kase, LCSW, designed for EMDR-trained therapists who are ready to go deeper. You will move beyond the basics and into the nuanced strategies that make the difference in complex cases: refined treatment planning, constricted processing techniques, skillful interweaves, and the science of using the social engagement system to support successful reprocessing.

This training is practical, clinical, and immediately applicable. Walk away with tools you can use in your next session.

Practical Interventions You Will Learn

This training gives you hands-on instruction in the advanced EMDR strategies that standard training skip. Each technique is taught with clear clinical rationale and direct application to complex trauma presentations.

  • The Preparation Hierarchy: A structured framework for assessing client reprocessing readiness before entering Phases 3-8.
  • Symptom-Focused Treatment Planning: Create targeted plans to reduce destabilizing symptoms and widen the window of tolerance.
  • Fractionated Treatment Planning: Work with cluster experiences using a fractionated approach for safer, more contained processing.
  • Preverbal Trauma Techniques: Use implicit memory treatment planning to access and process trauma that predates verbal memory.
  • EMD and EMDr: Constricted processing strategies that keep clients within the window of tolerance when full reprocessing is not appropriate.
  • The Art of the Interweave: When and how to use cognitive, affective, and somatic interweaves to move stuck processing forward.
  • Taxing Working Memory: A powerful interweave option that reduces client overwhelm and produces rapid SUDS reduction.
  • The Social Engagement System in EMDR: How to use the therapeutic relationship and nervous system co-regulation to support target reprocessing without disrupting the process.

What You'll Learn in This EMDRIA-Approved Advanced Training

By the end of this training, you will be able to:

  • Assess client readiness for reprocessing using the Preparation Hierarchy, so you can make a deliberate clinical decision rather than a best guess
  • Build symptom-focused and fractionated treatment plans for complex and cluster presentations that fall outside the standard three-pronged approach
  • Access preverbal and implicit memory targets using treatment planning techniques designed for trauma that has no narrative or conscious recall
  • Apply EMD and EMDr as constricted processing strategies for clients who need to stay within a tighter window of tolerance
  • Use interweaves confidently when processing stalls or loops, including taxing working memory as a targeted technique to reduce SUDS quickly
  • Leverage the social engagement system as an active clinical tool, supporting reprocessing through presence and co-regulation without disrupting the process

Who Is This Training For

This training is for EMDR-trained therapists who are ready to take their clinical work further. If you have completed EMDR Basic Training and are regularly working with trauma clients, this course was designed for you.

You will get the most out of Advanced EMDR Skills if you are:

  • Working with clients who present with complex PTSD, dissociation, or chronic destabilization
  • Noticing that your clients frequently get stuck in looping or shut-down processing
  • Wanting a structured clinical framework for when and how to depart from the standard protocol
  • Struggling to build effective treatment plans for clients with multiple or preverbal trauma
  • Ready to use the therapeutic relationship more intentionally as a reprocessing tool
  • Seeking EMDRIA, NBCC, or ASWB continuing education credits in an on-demand format
